Teaching aptitude is often mistaken for the ability to speak confidently in front of a class. In reality, good teaching requires something deeper: understanding the learner, selecting the right method, creating a suitable learning environment and checking whether learning has actually happened.

What is teaching aptitude?

A teacher with strong subject knowledge may still teach poorly when the explanation, pace, method or evaluation does not match the learner.

Teaching aptitude is the ability to make learning possible

Teaching is not simply the transfer of information from a knowledgeable person to a less knowledgeable person. It is a planned interaction in which the teacher helps the learner understand, practise, question and apply knowledge.

A lecturer completes all slides on research methods, but most students cannot distinguish experimental and descriptive research. Content delivery occurred, but learning did not.

Effective teaching The learner can use the concept

Real-life example: teaching plagiarism

In a teacher-centred approach, the teacher explains plagiarism and lists citation rules. In a learner-centred approach, students examine sample paragraphs, identify plagiarism and correct the references themselves. Both methods can be useful, but they serve different stages of learning.

Offline and online methods

Offline learning provides physical classroom interaction. Online learning may use live classes, recorded lessons, SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha or MOOCs. The stronger method is not automatically the newer one; it is the method that best matches the learner, objective, content and resources.
