What is the clearest difference between ecology and Environmental Science?
B — Ecology studies relationships; Environmental Science is broader and multidisciplinary.
Ecology is a major part of Environmental Science, but Environmental Science also uses chemistry, geology, economics, law, technology and policy.
A common trap is treating ecology and Environmental Science as exact synonyms.
Which Earth-system component includes all living organisms?
D — Biosphere.
The biosphere includes living organisms and the regions of Earth where life occurs. It continuously interacts with air, water and rocks.
Questions may ask how matter moves among the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere.
Why does usable energy decrease at successive trophic levels?
C — Some energy is dissipated as heat.
Energy is conserved, but transformations reduce the amount available for useful biological work because entropy increases.
Never say energy is destroyed. It changes form and becomes less available.
A lake receives 100 kg nitrogen per day and exports 70 kg. With no reaction loss, what is daily accumulation?
A — 30 kg/day.
Material balance: accumulation = input − output. Therefore, 100 − 70 = 30 kg/day.
In more advanced questions, add generation and consumption terms before calculating.
Why must an environmental conclusion specify spatial and temporal scale?
B — An effect can differ across location and time.
A short-term local observation may not represent a long-term regional or global response.
Watch for conclusions that generalise beyond the scale of the study.
Which example is a positive environmental feedback?
C — Ice melt lowers albedo and amplifies warming.
Positive feedback strengthens the initial change. Negative feedback counteracts it.
Positive does not mean beneficial; it means amplifying.
Which statement best reflects sustainable development?
C — Meet present needs without reducing future capacity.
Sustainable development integrates environmental protection, social well-being and economic development.
UGC NET may test intergenerational equity, intragenerational equity and the three pillars of sustainability.
Why is Environmental Science multidisciplinary?
C — Environmental problems require knowledge from several fields.
Climate change, biodiversity loss, water contamination and waste management cannot be understood through one discipline alone.
Distinguish multidisciplinary from interdisciplinary: the latter integrates methods and perspectives more deeply.
An ecosystem changes after disturbance but later returns close to its earlier condition. Which property is shown?
B — Resilience.
Resistance means remaining relatively unchanged during disturbance. Resilience means recovering after change.
Ask whether the system avoided change or recovered after changing.
How to revise these concepts
